Driving up north from Tbilisi, where the mountains are not yet very high, you can find a more friendly landscape. There are a couple of beautiful lakes laying between the hills. At one of those lakes lies the fortress of Ananuri. It makes a good stop over when you go to Kazbegi National Park.
The fortress of Ananuri is situated along the Georgian military highway and dates back to the 17th century. One of the most important building within the fortress is the church and is worth a visit! Even on the outside there are some beautifully carved inscriptions. Going inside a church in Georgia is a very very peaceful and impressive experience I think. It is very nice to observe the devotion people have in this region of Europe.
